Problem based on Atoms and Molecules
1. a). Calculate the relative mass of carbon tetrachlorideb). Calculate the molecular of magnesium chloride
Sol. a). Atomic mass of carbon = 12 u
Atomic mass of chloride = 35.5 u
So molecular mass of carbon tetrachloride = 12 + 4 * 35.5
= 12 + 142 = 154 u
b). Atomic mass of magnesium = 24 u
Atomic mass of chlorine = 35.5 u
So molecular mass of magnesium chloride = 24 + 2 * 35.5
= 24 + 71 = 95 u

a) 13 g of H
b). 12.044 * 10^23 number of H atoms
Sol. a). Atomic mass of H = 1 u
Molar mass of H = 1 g
The number of moles = Given mass / Molar mass
n = m / M
= 13 / 1 = 13 u
b). 1 mole = 6.022 * 10^23
The number of moles = Given number of particles / Avogadro Number
n = (12.044 * 10^23) / (6.022 * 10^23)
n = 2
3). Calculate the mass of following
a). 0.2 mole of hydrogen gas
b). 0.2 mole of H atom
c). 6.022 * 10^23 number of H atom
d). 12.044 * 10^23 number of hydrogen gas
Sol. a). Mass = Molar Mass * Number of moles
m = M * n
m = 2 * 0.2
m = 0.4 g
b). Mass = Molar Mass * Number of moles
m = M * n
m = 1 * 0.2
m = 0.2 g
c). The number of moles = Given number of particles / Avogadro number
m = M * n
= 1 * {(6.022 * 10^23) / (6.022 * 10^23)}
= 1 g
d). n = Given number of particles / Avogadro number
m = M * (Given number of particles / Avogadro number)
= 2 * (12.044 * 10^23 / 6.022 * 10^23)
= 2 * 2
= 4 g
4). Calculate the mass of following
a). 64 g of oxygen gas
b). 0.5 mole of carbon atom
c). 46 g of sodium atom
d). 0.5 mole of oxygen atom
Sol. a). The number of atoms = (Given mass / Molar mass) * Avogadro number
N = (m / M) * Avogadro number
= (64 / 32) * 6.022 * 10^23
= 12.044 * 10^23
b). The number of particles = Number of moles of particles * Avogadro number
= 0.5 * 6.022 * 10^23
= 3.011 * 10^23
c). The number of atoms = (Given mass / Molar mass) * Avogadro number
N = (m / M) * Avogadro number
= (46 / 23) * 6.022 * 10^23
= 12.044 * 10^23
d). The number of particles = Number of moles of particles * Avogadro number
= 0.5 * 6.022 * 10^23
= 3.011 * 10^23
5. a). Calculate the relative mass of aluminium oxide
b). Calculate the molecular of Calcium chloride
Sol. a). Atomic mass of aluminium = 27 u
Atomic mass of oxide = 16 u
So molecular mass of aluminium oxide = 27 * 2 + 16 * 3
= 54 + 48 u = 102 u
b). Atomic mass of calcium = 40 u
Atomic mass of chloride = 35.5 u
So molecular mass of calcium chloride = 40 + 2 * 35.5
= 40 + 71 = 111 u
